Every time I make something special for dinner I wish I had fancy linen to compliment the food. Nice linen for the tabletop adds a touch of elegance to any table setting. So I dug through my fabric stash and found two prints that would make great reversible napkins. I only wish I had enough material to make six. Oh well !
If you can sew a straight line then you can definitely sew yourself these napkins. You can even make matching placemats using the same method . For now, lets concentrate on making the napkins, we don’t want to shock the family too much, do we?
To make four 17 inch napkins you will need:
Two coordinating fabrics (1 yard each)
Matching thread
Sewing Machine
Scissors
Prewash both the fabrics before starting. This eliminates shrinkage and the napkins will retain their size and shape even after repeated washing. Therefore this step is very important!
Now cut 18 inch square pieces from both fabrics. Pin right sides together.
Sew all four sides with a quarter inch seam allowance, leaving a two inch gap on one side .
Turn the napkin inside out through the gap. Iron the seams flat. Top stitch with matching thread . This will close the gap and give the napkins a finished look.
The napkins are now ready for the table! They are perfect for an elegant dinner party as well as every day use.
I gave the napkins a light spray of starch to give them a crisp look. I can’t wait to use them . I plan to make some more to give as gifts, because I know that they will be loved and appreciated by everyone who receives them.Plus they’re eco-friendly. So do give it a try!
